Apollo Kabukuru, MD
I was born in Uganda and spent my early childhood there before my family and I immigrated to Los Angeles as refugees. In Los Angeles, Kaiser Permanente provided our health care and my parents’ employment. I joined the Navy at 17, traveling the world and serving as a corpsman, providing medical care for Marines and their families. I decided to become a doctor so I could give back to those who are medically underserved, including veterans and fellow immigrants. I attended medical school in Seattle, where I’d spent multiple tours during my Navy career. One day I hope to start a clinic near where I grew up in southwest Uganda, to help people get the vital care they need. My partner and I live in Seattle with our young son who was born at the start of the pandemic. We also share our home with our energetic Labrador and springer spaniel mix. I chose to join Kaiser Permanente because of my long history of receiving excellent care from this organization. It’s the perfect place for me to practice medicine.
