Fly Bites

Topic Overview

There are many species of flies, ranging in size from barely visible to up to 1 in. (2.5 cm). Flies stab and pierce the skin.

Some flies, such as deerflies, blackflies, horseflies, and sand flies, can produce allergic reactions. Reactions are usually not as severe as those caused by bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets.

Common symptoms of a fly bite are pain and itching at the site of the bite. Occasionally, bleeding at the bite site may occur.

Home treatment to relieve symptoms is all that is needed for most fly bites.
