50s and Beyond: Healthy Aging

When you reach age 50 and beyond, you may feel a new kind of freedom. With your reproductive years behind you, you can focus on other aspects of your health. And there's a lot you can do to age well.

Because you are at increased risk for conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain cancers, it's important to take charge of your health through conscientious preventive care and healthy daily habits.

Talk with your doctor about any concerns or health symptoms you are experiencing. They may be due to fluctuating hormones which are part of menopause. But symptoms such as fatigue and depression can also be caused by other conditions such as thyroid changes, which are more common in women over 50. Certain skin changes, like changes in the size, shape, or color of moles, may be skin cancer, which can be treated if caught early.

Most women go through menopause in their 50s, and experience symptoms such as hot flashes, lower libido, and other sexual challenges. We can help you adjust to these so you can continue to enjoy sex into your older years. Remember to continue to practice safe sex. While pregnancy is unlikely, you are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections.
