When a person has classic symptoms of sleep apnea, it may be possible for Washington Permanente Medical Group to diagnosis the condition without any testing. We can diagnose the majority of other patients with a home sleep study designed to check for interrupted breathing.

Home Testing for Sleep Apnea

Up until the 1990s, sleep disorders could only be diagnosed in a laboratory sleep center, and many people were going undiagnosed. In 1994, we pioneered a home-testing method that gave patients access to testing with more convenience and less cost than conventional testing in an inpatient sleep clinic. Because of this, the percentage of our patients whom we diagnose and treat for sleep disorders is much higher than in the general community.

How does the home sleep test work? After getting instructions from our sleep medicine staff, you take home a sleep-test machine, hook yourself up to it, sleep through the night, and return the machine the next morning. One of our sleep medicine specialists reads the results.

If a home test can't pinpoint the cause of your problem or we suspect another type of sleep disorder, you may need inpatient testing.

At our Sleep Lab at our Capitol Hill Campus in Seattle, we diagnose and treat patients for more complicated sleep ailments including narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, and various parasomnias, such as sleepwalking and night terrors.

Our lab has four inpatient rooms, with the latest diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Since rest is essential for a successful test, we've created a warm and soothing environment, with comfortable beds and a considerate, thoughtful staff to assist you. We conduct studies Tuesday through Friday.

Ongoing Support for CPAP Treatment

If we diagnose you with moderate or severe sleep apnea, a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which you will use while sleeping, is the most likely treatment. Our sleep medicine staff will work closely with you to find a style of CPAP mask that's comfortable, fits well, and is effective. When used correctly and consistently, the CPAP machine is about 90 percent effective.
