Mental health and wellness

Kaiser Permanente complies with Brennen's Law (HB 1099). This Washington state law requires health plans to provide specific information about accessing mental health care to members.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. If you're suffering from depression, anxiety, substance use, or other mental health concerns, we're here to help. You deserve care that supports your total health — mind, body, and spirit. At Kaiser Permanente, our mental health providers treat a wide range of conditions, from temporary anxiety brought on by stress to disorders like bipolar. No referral is needed to access mental health services or our wellness resources.

These care options are a call or a click away.

Call or email your doctor's office*

Your personal doctor knows you best—your medical history, preferences, beliefs, and lifestyle. He or she can connect you to care that's right for your needs and identify or rule out medical issues that may be causing your symptoms.

For most situations, contacting your personal doctor is the easiest way to get started with mental health care. Many mental health concerns can be effectively addressed in the primary care setting. To support this process, at Kaiser Permanente care locations we annually screen adults for common mental health concerns and have licensed, mental health clinicians who work as part of the primary care team to provide assessment and short-term treatment.

If you don't already have a personal doctor or provider, you can find one in your area by calling Member Services at 1-888-901-4636 or reviewing doctor profiles in our provider directory.

Call a consulting nurse

Get help anytime day or night from a telephone-based advice nurse at 1-800-297-6877. The nurse can evaluate symptoms you're having and provide recommendations about next steps, such as making an appointment, going to urgent care, or trying some self-care techniques. The nurse can also consult with a doctor on-site 24/7 and a psychiatrist who is on-call for mental health needs.

Call for a first-time specialty appointment

To access a mental health specialist (such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or master's level therapist) outside of the primary care setting, or find addiction treatment, call 1-888-287-2680, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

You'll be asked a few questions to determine your mental health issue. The questions also help to match you with a specialist you'll feel comfortable with. You may be referred to a Kaiser Permanente clinician or a community provider in your plan network, depending on your care needs and where you're located.

Kaiser Permanente Mental Health is located in Bellevue, Bremerton, Everett, Olympia, Spokane, Tacoma, and in Seattle's Northgate and Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

If you or a loved one is in crisis

Call 1-888-287-2680 if you can't wait for a routine appointment and need to talk to a therapist as soon as possible. The Mental Health Access Center has providers on call to address more urgent needs.

For a life-threatening emergency, such as a possible drug overdose, a suicide attempt, or risk of a suicide attempt, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency care facility.
