You have made a big decision to have Total Joint Replacement surgery. Although you may feel anxious or overwhelmed at times, remember that this is a partnership, and we are here for you. Your Kaiser Permanente Medical team will support you and guide you through the surgery journey from start to finish.
Let’s talk about our team and the important role each person plays in your care. At the center of the team is you. Your motivation to prepare for surgery and actively recover will be the key to OUR success.
Next to you, the Coach you select will need to be by your side for the long haul. They will learn about total joint replacement with you, attend your appointments, and help you with daily activities like preparing meals, and keeping you on a routine of icing and elevation. You have probably already met the Clinic team during your appointments leading up to surgery. Nurses, Medical Assistants and others in the clinic will assist you at your appointments before and after surgery.
As you begin preparing for your surgery, you will meet and work closely with a Nurse Navigator who has special skills in total joint replacement. The Nurse Navigator will be your first point of contact for questions and resources. The Nurse Navigators are here to help you learn about the surgery process, ensure you are prepared, and monitor your at-home recovery. Don’t wait to call your Nurse Navigator if you have questions—there is a lot to learn, and your Nurse Navigator is here to help.
On the day of surgery, you will work with an expert medical team. You will check-in and then meet with your Anesthesiologist to get ready for surgery. Your Surgeon will greet you before starting the surgery to replace your arthritic joint with a new one. A Physician Assistant will work alongside the surgeon during your surgery. Throughout the day, you will interact with Total Joint Nurses who will be supporting you AND the surgical team.
Before you leave the surgery center, you will meet with a Physical Therapist. The therapist will teach you important movements and exercises to make sure you are prepared to recover at home with the help of your coach. You may also meet with an Occupational Therapist who can show you simple ways to perform daily activities in your home after surgery.
After you are home and settled you will begin physical therapy to regain mobility and strength. Getting back to your routine may take some time, but you will be in good hands.
If you have already made arrangements for a coach to help with your recovery, you are on track! If you don’t have a coach yet, finding one is your most important next step.
Your Kaiser Permanente Total Joint Care team is built around you and your needs. Remember, your motivation to prepare for surgery and actively recover will be the key to a successful surgery. We will work with you every step of the way to achieve the best possible results.
